Surongo Bangla Movies-2023

Raihan Rafi’s 'Surongo' is the latest Bangladeshi thriller-drama to hit the screens, starring Afran Nisho (of Kaiser and Syndicate fame) and Toma Mirza. Upon marrying Moyna (Mirza), Masud (Nisho) learns that she has a habit of asking him for money and gifts. He tries to keep up with her demands, but shortly after, she finds him a contact through which he goes to Malaysia for work. Meanwhile, Masud’s friend Jahir (Mostafa Monwar) starts pursuing Moyna, and buys expensive gifts to woo her. A lonely and friendless Moyna relents and they begin an affair.

Soon after, Moyna leaves with Jahir, and starts living with him. To win back Moyna and make a lot of money, Masud decides to dig a tunnel to rob a bank. The premise of this plot has plenty of holes and leaves the audience questioning many things (for instance, how Masud could afford this plan). However, the director’s single-mindedness in creating unidimensional characters is perhaps the biggest drawback of the film.

Masud’s trajectory has been given room to expand but the script wasn’t that kind to Moyna. The director seemed quite hell-bent on making her, and money, the root of all evil. It’s similar to the treatment given to Gulti (Nazifa Tushi) in Mejbaur Rahman Sumon’s Hawa, where her character was shown as the ‘troublemaker’.

Mirza’s chemistry with Nisho and Monwar is different but she plays it out well and it makes her relatable. Her strong acting and expressive eyes can draw out compassion from the viewers.

In the second half, Shahiduzzaman Selim’s short, spectacular role as the investigating officer steals the frame. However, logic seems to evade the script at times and without Selim’s presence, it would have probably fallen flat on its face.

The film’s music, scored by Sajid Sarker and Emon Chowdhury, has a couple of hummable tunes, like “Gaa Chuye Bol”. However, Nusrat Faria's item number feels more like a filler. The cinematography by Sumon Sarkar captures some beautiful frames, especially in low light. And despite the plot issues, Surongo is definitely an interesting watch.
